Synthetic sapphire crystals have one big thing going for them: they are fantastically resistant to scratching. That might make them seem like the ideal material for a smartphone display – and we've already seen them in luxury phones like those from Vertu – but they're also not without their problems: they're expensive to produce, and though they have excellent protection against scratches, they're still subject to shatter damage. Still, that no-more-scratches business is so compelling that we've been following the technology in hopes of a sign that it could one day come to a more ...

When we heard about the super-expensive Vertu Ti earlier this week, we focused mainly on its middling specs, and how we really hoped for something a little better for $10,000. Today there's a new interview out with Vertu's head of concept and design, Hutch Hutchinson, and while he spends some time predictably defending the company's choices in creating the Ti, he also drops a new bombshell: there was a time when Vertu was planning to bring to develop the Ti as a Windows Phone 8 handset. While Windows Phone is no stranger to the idea of boutique smartphones (just look at the LG-made Jil ...

Rarely has the "lull" between trade shows given us so much to talk about. We kicked off the week with an exciting announcement welcoming two new members to the Pocketnow team, and since then we've barely been able to keep news, editorials, and videos on the front page long enough to read them. This feed is on fire. From ever-strengthening rumors about the HTC M7 and Samsung Galaxy S IV, to interviews with newcomers like Jolla, to new looks at old friends with BlackBerry 10, to modding and jailbreaking today's top smartphones, we've gotten a lot done since the last episode of the Weekly, ...

Luxury smartphones can be real let-downs. Sure, there's the occasional model like the Porsche Design P'9981 BlackBerry, which while it costs $2000, is still essentially a Bold 9900, probably the best BlackBerry around when the P'9981 launched. On the other hand, there seem to be far too many of these boutique phones that, when you get down to brass tacks, just aren't that impressive as smartphones, with surprisingly lower-end specs. That's the vibe we're getting from the new Vertu Android, the Vertu Ti. Vertu used to be a division of Nokia, but it's since gone its own way, and this Ti is a ...

Vertu was Nokia's luxury handset division -- before the Finnish company decided to sell -- but that doesn't stop the Windows Phone 8 operating system, allegedly pictured above, to identify this handset as a Vertu phone. We've seen some screenshots of the upcoming Microsoft mobile platform and now, if these pictures turn out to be true, we can expect a Vertu phone with 64GB of storage to run Windows Phone 8. The second image seems to show off some sort of SkyDrive integration which might be built-in deep with the next Windows Phone platform. However, whether the images are true or not is ...
