Most of us who are waiting for Android updates have our eyes on Ice Cream Sandwich; for another group of users, holding on to aging handsets, they'd be happy just to finally see Gingerbread arrive. Sprint subscribers with an LG Optimus S have found themselves in just such a situation for months on end, after news first came of a pending Gingerbread update in September of last year. As if not getting Gingerbread until then wasn't bad enough, once the updates started going out it was only a few days before problems became apparent with the release, and Sprint ended up having to halt its ...

Two weeks ago we told you how Sprint users were finally about to get some Gingerbread for their LG Optimus S handsets, just a few weeks after the update became available for the international Optimus One. Things were looking good, and we noted "assuming nothing goes wrong and forces it to halt distribution, it should hit nearly every subscriber with an Optimus S within about ten days." Oh, how we should have knocked on wood! It turns out that the update has been wreaking havoc on the Optimus S, breaking so much functionality that Sprint's withdrawn the update. Sprint acknowledges the ...

Earlier this summer, we saw LG start distributing long-awaited Gingerbread updates to the Optimus One, first to limited geographic regions before expanding its availability. Months later, some are still waiting for their chance to make the leap to Android 2.3; the latest group to get the nod for Gingerbread is that of Sprint users with the LG Optimus S. Sprint has announced that system software LS670ZVH is on its way to bring Gingerbread to the Optimus One-series phone. Like any good Gingerbread update, we can see an assortment of device-specific remedies packed alongside the standard list ...

If it wasn't enough that LG misstated the presence of minimum Gingerbread hardware specifications in a Facebook post earlier this week, it turns out that the other assertion to come from that incident, that Optimus One phones won't get Android 2.3, is also false. LG put up a public notice today that all the Optimus One-series hamdsets will definitely be getting their own Gingerbread updates in the future. There's no schedule available yet, but seeing as just two days ago the company apparently had no plans to send out the update at all, we're guessing it could take a while to materialize. ...

If you're anxiously awaiting the arrival of Gingerbread for your Android handset of choice, you may have gotten a bit of a shock when an LG employee on the company's Facebook page claimed that Gingerbread hardware requirements meant that the latest Android release won't be coming to any devices with a CPU running slower than 1GHz. Responding to a user's question about when the Optimum S would see a Gingerbread update, LG posted that the phone's 600MHz CPU wouldn't meet the 1GHz Gingerbread cut-off. Google hadn't said anything about minimum requirements, and the Android developer community ...

If you've got an LG Optimus S and you've been kicking yourself over the inability to do whatever you want with it, your suffering can now be over. The first step in the path to freedom is rooting your phone, which you should be able to do with the z4root app, but if you can't find it, or would rather go through all the steps the old fashioned way, this forum should help you out. Once rooted you can flash a custom recovery image and then flash a custom ROM. The first custom ROM for the Optimus S is ThundeROM V1. If you make the leap, make sure you come back here and let us know how things ...

You know what I like? Updates. Updates fix bugs, add features, often-times make things go faster, and occasionally bring you unexpected goodies. Such is the case for the recent "maintenance update" that Sprint released for the LG Optimus S. In addition to the typical bug-fixes, Sprint included a treat: The Swype keyboard! Although it took me a while to warm-up to Swype, this custom on-screen keyboard has become my favorite soft-keyboard (IME) available today. Swype, for those of you who don't know, can function like a typical keyboard, but also gives you the ability to long-press on a key ...

Yesterday we reported how the LG Optimus One has already sold over one million units in 40 days from its launch with the device being available in Europe, Asia-Pacific countries and the USA (as Optimus S on Sprint, Optimus T with T-Mobile and Vortex coming soon to Verizon - to be launched on November 18, 2010). LG has just released a funny TV ad for the Optimus One emphasizing on voice search and how it can save you in situations like... hostage negotiation. Really, the ad is cool and with such marketing LG might be well on its way to that 10 million-seller smartphone target for the ...

You might remember that the Android 2.2 Froyo powered LG Optimus One, to which the manufacturer refers to as the "transitional smartphone", scored fairly well in benchmarks being almost on par with the Nexus One. LG announced today that it sold one million of LG Optimus One units worldwide in merely 40 days after its initial release. Available in most of Europe, Asia-Pacific countries and the USA (as Optimus S on Sprint, Optimus T with T-Mobile and Vortex coming soon to Verizon - to be launched on November 18, 2010), the Optimus One is, according to the manufacturer, "the fastest selling ...
