iPad 5 could measure even thinner than we’ve been expecting

by Stephen Schenck on

As we were just noting when bringing you word of those new pics, seemingly showing off an iPad mini 2 in gold, there’s been no shortage of leaks of new iPad hardware. That’s covered the iPad 5 as well as the mini 2, and both have been popping up in one form or another for months now. We expect the new full-sized iPad to pick up some of the look of the iPad mini, shrinking down its side bezels in the process, but we haven’t been exactly sure just how big the new iPad 5 would be. Back in June, a schematic attempted to clue us in to the tablet’s thickness, but left its face a guessing game. As we close in on a likely launch window, a new leak just might be able to sure-up any lingering questions about the new iPad’s dimensions.

Unlike that June schematic, revealing a thickness of 7.9mm, this suggests we’re pushing thinner still, with the final tablet measuring in at only 7.5mm. Height-wise, the new iPad should unsurprisingly be nearly the size of last fall’s model, though just a smidge smaller at 240mm, even. And with those narrower bezels, the iPad 5 may make its largest cuts when it comes to width, going from 185.5 to 169.5mm, or nearly two-thirds of an inch less wide.

Then again, it’s well easy to just make up numbers, and we’d feel a lot better about these measurements if they were coming from someone with an assembled iPad 5 and a pair of calipers – maybe recording the whole thing? Even if this is slightly off, it’s likely going to be pretty darn close to what we actually get.
