Nokia Submitting To Independent Ethics Report In Wake Of Lumia 920 Ad Controversy
Last week, following Nokia’s announcements of the Lumia 820 and Lumia 920, we talked about something that looked a little off in one of Nokia’s promotional videos. While supposedly filmed using the PureView camera on the Lumia 920, a stray reflection seemed to indicate that a much larger camera was actually in use. Ultimately, Nokia publicly apologized, explaining that it was attempting to simulate the sort of quality you’d see with the 920′s optical stabilization. In the days that followed, Nokia’s had some time to reflect on the situation, and is commissioning an ethics report to help it better understand how things went so wrong.
Especially with the 920′s PureView being so different from what we expected of the technology following the release of the 808, it was important for Nokia to clearly explain the value of this different system. It tried to do that eventually, but by not making it clear that the 920 performance was simulated from the outset, it may have ruined a great opportunity.
A Nokia spokesperson explained, “what we understand to date is that it was nobody’s intention to mislead, but there was poor judgment in the decision not to use a disclaimer.” Hopefully, following this audit, the company can take steps to avoid such a botched launch next time around.
