In-App Purchases Get Real: Amazon Lets Apps Sell You Physical Goods

Beyond all the excitement over Amazon’s announcements of its new Kindle Fire and Fire HD lineup, the company is also introducing some new features to its app store ecosystem, which got a bit drowned-out by the hardware news. We may be used to in-app purchases giving us extra credits or stronger weapons in a game, but Amazon envisions a situation where those impulse buys extend to ordering physical items.

The idea is that Amazon already has a huge distribution system for physical goods in place, so why not leverage it for developers releasing apps through its store? Such apps will be able to make use of Amazon’s 1-Click ordering system to let users buy items offered to them.

The first will be Activision’s Skylanders, which will let players buy figurines of the game’s characters from within the app.

It’s nothing revolutionary, as we’ve been buying things with our phones for what feels like forever, and many apps already allow placing orders to one extent or another. Instead, this seems more like the next logical step, and it’s almost surprising Amazon wasn’t doing it sooner.
