For those of you that think that Apple won’t be willing to discard 10-year old technology with their old iPod 30-pin dock connector, think again. If they’re ditching disk drives on all their future computers at times when DVDs and CDs are still being sold, this won’t be an exception. Recent leaks seem to prove that the dock connector will become smaller, but this is the fist time we find leaks of how the actual male portion of the connector will look like.

The new dock connector is so small that a standard-sized USB connector seems huge beside it, but to be honest, it seems no smaller than the standardized microUSB connector almost every other smartphone uses. There seem to only be 8 pins in this new connector, but it’s possible that Apple uses both sides to double the amount of pins. One huge disappointment though is that this doesn’t seem to be a magnetic connector, like MagSafe connectors we find on every MacBook currently in the market. I’ve never really complained about the 30-pin connector because I’ve never really damaged one, nor the connector port on any iOS device. The advantage about MagSafe connectors is precisely the fact that neither portions of the connection will ever become damaged out of strain, but this future port doesn’t seem that reliable.

Again, these are just leaks. This could probably just be a prototype, and I’m on the list of people that hopes it is.
