Ice Cream Sandwich Adoption Finally Taking Off In Latest Android Stats
The source code to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has been available since mid-November of last year. Despite being out in the wild for what’s coming up on nine months, and the follow-up Jelly Bean release already becoming available, the vast majority of us have yet to start using this most recent branch of the platform. The good news is that, after months and months of slowly gaining users, Ice Cream Sandwich is really starting to increase its momentum and pick up users at a much faster pace.
According to stats provided by Google, Ice Cream Sandwich devices make up 15.9% of all Androids currently in use. This time last month, ICS was only on 10.9% of Androids, meaning there’s been an incredible 45% increase in ICS’s share over the course of just one month.
It would be interesting to know just what fraction of that gain is due to the majority of new Androids now arriving with Android 4.0 already installed, and how many of those new users can be explained by phones getting their ICS updates; we’ve seen a big uptick in their availability over the last month or two. Unfortunately, such a breakdown isn’t provided in these figures, leaving us to speculate.
It’s noteworthy that Ice Cream Sandwich’s share of the Android version pie has now surpassed Froyo’s, currently with 15.5%. Gingerbread continues to dominate, with just over 60% of all Android owners running it. Pre-Froyo Android builds combined account for less than 5% of all devices.
