Not many smartphone users in the US get very excited when someone starts talking about ZTE. Maybe it’s because we’re used to seeing the brand shoved under the rug as its models are re-packaged with carrier branding. Maybe it’s because instead of models like the quad-core handsets we hear announced internationally, we end up getting phones like the Score M, which arrived in March of this year with a seriously dated 600MHz processor. ZTE’s working on improving its image, and if it starts releasing more phones like the ZTE Flash we just saw tipped for Sprint, it might be on the right track.

According to this leak, the Flash has both the look and the specs of an upper-tier phone from a major manufacturer. Its dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 is good enough for the US version of the Galaxy S III, and the 4.5-inch 720p display will have an impressive density of 326ppi. The 12.6-megapixel main camera is right up there with the highest pixel-count sensors we’re currently seeing on Android, and with support for Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC, we’re starting to get excited for the Flash’s arrival. The phone should arrive with a gigabyte of RAM, and while there’s only 8GB of flash on board, microSDXC expansion gives it plenty of room to grow.

Supposedly, Sprint is interesting launching the Flash on October 14, but this far out we could easily see that move around. The phone should operate on Sprint’s still-new LTE network, and arrive running Ice Cream Sandwich (though that could always change to Jelly Bean in the interim). There’s no word yet on pricing, but being a ZTE model, we expect to see it priced competitively.
