Just yesterday we learned that the recent update for the international version of the Galaxy S III, the one that removed the integrated local search feature at the heart of one of Samsung’s current disputes with Apple, was about to be undone. Samsung called the release “inadvertent”, and promised that, for users in the UK at least, a new update would be dropping in just a matter of days with the intent of restoring that functionality. It seems that even giving itself a few days was unnecessary, and the update is already heading out to GS3 owners.

The petite 5MB update restores the phone’s universal search, and appears to also update the phone’s baseband and include a newly-built kernel; that’s not too shabby at all for such a small release, and one compiled on short notice, at that. The update also mentions the inclusion of some nebulous stability improvements, but doesn’t go into detail on what any might entail.

Frankly, Samsung’s impressive turn-around time with this release is enough to make us smartphone users in the US a bit jealous, used to arduously drawn-out approval processes.

Until Samsung and Apple resolve their latest patent spat, don’t expect to see a similar update come to the manufacturer’s US Androids anytime soon.
