We knew it was coming, whether in a matter of days, or even weeks, but sooner or later Google would introduce the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean source code to the Android Open Source Project’s codebase. Sure enough, it’s making the push today, releasing Jelly Bean for Android devs everywhere to start pawing through.

Google’s Jean-Baptiste Queru made the announcement a little earlier this evening, posting to the Android Building Google Group. Google’s still in the process of syncing it with existing code on the AOSP, but it should definitely all be in place by a little later on tonight.

With the Android 4.1 code out there, expect a flood of Jelly Bean ROMs to start emerging for some of your favorite handsets. We’ve already heard from the CyanogenMod team that they’ll be starting work on CM10 as soon as they can get finished-up with the final CM9 release. Hopefully, we’ll get an updated sense of the effort required to integrate the Jelly Bean changes once devs have a chance to look through tonight’s release, but the thinking so far has been that Jelly Bean should be a relatively painless release to work with, at least compared to the overhaul needed for Ice Cream Sandwich.

Proprietary binaries are already out for the Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. Those for the Nexus S and Xoom tablet should be arriving soon.
