NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 may dominate the quad-core smartphone market at the moment, at least when it comes to being featured in a number of models, but the second half of 2012 is bound to see things shaken-up a bit. We already have the Exynos 4 Quad to compete with it, and we could start seeing quad-core Snapdragons later this year. We’ve also been curious about the K3V2 custom chip Huawei’s been working on, with the aim of launching it with the company’s Ascend D Quad. We recently heard some rumors that production issues with the chip might result in a delayed launch; Huawei has now confirmed those new plans, with the Ascend D Quad not coming to Europe until October.

China gets the phone a little over a month earlier, in late August, but that’s still an unfortunate delay for Huawei. When it first announced the phone, along with its quad-core chip, the manufacturer called it the fastest quad-core handset around. August will mark the passage of six months since Huawei made that statement, and time is not kind to such boasting.

We’re curious if Huawei will downplay its earlier statements at the time of the Ascend D Quad’s release, or if it’s going to stick with its claims. You can bet that benchmarkers will be quick to put those to the test, as soon as they get the chance.
