Why Does The Lumia 900 Want You To Visit Akron, Ohio?

When we learn about smartphone bugs, they usually fall into just one of a few categories. There might issues with wireless connectivity, or maybe the phone seems to not be managing its battery life very well. The Lumia 900, though, is starting to get a reputation for bugs that are a bit outside the ordinary, if not downright weird. First we had the phone’s display going all purple when users dialed-down the brightness; Nokia managed to fix that one in a software update. The latest head-scratcher of a bug has users discovering that their phones seem convinced they’re in Akron, Ohio.

It’s not entirely clear why some users run into the issue at times, while others don’t, but it does seem to be affecting a good number of handsets. One popular theory ties the problem to AT&T A-GPS data, and the fact that the carrier has a data center in Akron itself, so maybe that’s being used as some sort of default coordinate when something else fails. Toggling AT&T LTE data off, as well as resetting the phone, have been put forward as possible remedies for affected handsets.

It seems that AT&T may have recently taken steps to attempt mitigating the Akron issue, but users still report other abnormal GPS behavior.

If you’ve got a 900 on AT&T, have you run into this issue in the past weeks? If you have, does it seem to be getting better at all, or is your phone continuing to insist you relocate to the Buckeye State?
