Microsoft Gets Itself Into Android Gaming With Kinectimals Release

In some ways, companies responsible for smartphone platforms have been tightening their ranks lately, with moves like Apple’s abandonment of Google mapping data for iOS 6, preferring instead to rely on a variety of sources it compiled itself. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are those cases where companies have shown an unusual willingness to embrace their competitors, like when Microsoft announced its on{X} scripting system, not for Windows Phone, but as an Android exclusive. It looks like Microsoft isn’t about to slow down with the Android love, as the company has just released its first game for the platform.

We’ve seen game-related apps from Microsoft for Android in the past, but these have been less outright games on their own, and more like accessories to be used alongside Xbox 360 titles; Halo Waypoint is a perfect example.

This week’s release of Kinectimals for Android still ties-in to the 360 title, but it’s far more of game in its own right than those previous releases. Unlike all those free titles, this one will actually cost you, selling for about $3. The app, already also available for iOS and Windows Phone, lets you interact with virtual animals from your smartphone, and if you do have the 360 version, they can be used together to unlock new animals.

Don’t be shy, Microsoft; there are plenty of Android gamers who would love to see even more apps from you. Let’s keep them coming!
