When it comes to names for Apple products, we’ve learned to not get too comfortable with speculative guesses, as Apple has a way of defying expectations. Last fall, instead of an iPhone 5, we got the iPhone 4S, and earlier this year we saw the company’s latest tablet arrive not as the iPad 3, but just as “the new iPad”. As such, we don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves and get comfortable with a rumored name that might not end up on the finished product. Keeping that in mind, a recent IP ruling does tend to lend a little credence to one theory on how the next iPhone will arrive.

Apple recently won a judgment against the company squatting on the iPhone5.com domain name. The World Intellectual Property Organization agreed with Apple’s request to take control of the domain, which was being used to host a small forum.

Obviously, this doesn’t full-on confirm that Apple plans to release its next smartphone as the iPhone 5, and this could be nothing more than Apple’s due diligence to protect its trademarks, but we can’t help but consider the possible connection between this action and expectations for a new iPhone this fall.
